Photographing Bridges

2022 Tony & Keith Photographic Workshops: Photographing Bridges

The Tony and Keith photographic workshop to the Oregon north coast spends its first night under the shadow of the Astoria-Megler Bridge. The structure, opened in 1966, is over 4 miles long and connects Washington to Oregon over the Columbia River. Depending on conditions, wonderful images can be made from either end of it. The shoots can be very dynamic: some days it is shrouded in rain and fog, some days there is heavy ship traffic, and some nights it is possible to shoot the stars through the structure. In the Tony and Keith Photographic Workshop, there will be at least 2 opportunities to shoot this Oregon landmark.

Before shooting any bridge a little "pre-flight" planning should be taken up with some easy-to-use tools. One such tool is the software App you can put on your phone called Photo Pills, or The Photographers Ephemeris. Both are fabulous tools for figuring out your best locations to shoot the bridge, the angles, or the direction you should be shooting from, and also the best time of day based on certain known weather factors and cloud covers. These Apps can also be used to determine the best time of year or season to shoot in based on pre-scouted positions when you are looking for a specific sun or moon angle.

Sometimes you have complete control when you can arrive at such a location, others it's a target of opportunity and you want to utilize the best light you can for the time you are there.  Either way, these tools mentioned are well with their investment for providing you short and long-term planning for maximizing your shots of a bridge. Or any other subject for that matter.

Join us for the Northern Oregon workshop and see a couple of amazing bridges that photographers from around the world have come to capture. For information click here. https://kfrenchphoto.com/photography-workshops/oregon-workshop
